ब्लैक-चीक्ड लवबर्ड, जीनस AGAPORNIS की नौ प्रजातियों में से एक है और इसे 1904 में डॉ. A.H.B.Kirkmaí ने खोजा था। पहले नमूने लगभग तीन साल बाद यूरोप पहुँचे।
ब्लैक-चीक्ड की मौजूदा रेंज ज़ाम्बिया, नामीबिया और ज़िम्बाब्वे के कुछ हिस्सों में हैं। ब्लैक-कॉलर्ड को छोड़कर, जो इस जीनस में सबसे कम जाना-माना है, सभी नौ प्रजातियों में इसकी रेंज सबसे छोटी है।
ब्लैक-चीक्ड की जंगली आबादी के सर्वे से पता चलता है कि यह अफ्रीका का सबसे खतरे में पड़ा तोता है। माना जाता है कि इस प्रजाति की शुरुआती गिरावट 1920/1930 के दशक में पक्षियों के व्यापार के लिए भारी जाल बिछाने से हुई थी।
रहने की जगह में बदलाव, पानी के सही गड्ढे, मोपेन वुडलैंड्स का खत्म होना, गैर-कानूनी तरीके से पकड़ना फिर से शुरू होना और न्यासा लवबर्ड को दूसरे इलाकों से गैर-जिम्मेदाराना तरीके से लाना, इन सब खतरों की वजह से जंगल में इस प्रजाति की रिकवरी रुक जाती है। ये प्रजाति ब्लैक-चीक्ड के साथ आसानी से हाइब्रिडाइज़ हो जाती है। ब्लैक-चीक्ड असल में न्यासा के साइज़ का ही होता है और इसके सिर और ऊपरी ब्रेस्ट के रंग के अलावा, यह न्यासा लवबर्ड्स की दूसरी खूबियों जैसा ही होता है। ये कैद में काफी मज़बूत होते हैं, लेकिन बहुत ज़्यादा नमी और ठंड की कंडीशन से बुरी तरह प्रभावित हो सकते हैं।
जंगल में इस प्रजाति की रिकवरी, रहने की जगह तक ही सीमित है, यही सबसे अच्छा और मुमकिन ऑप्शन है। इस प्रजाति की कैद में प्योरब्रीड आबादी को बनाए रखना, जेनेटिक बदलाव या खत्म होने से बचाने के लिए बहुत ज़रूरी है। हालांकि, इस बात पर ज़ोर देना ज़रूरी है कि कैद में आबादी बनाने से जंगल में इस प्रजाति के बचने की ज़रूरत किसी भी तरह से कम नहीं हुई है।
