Creating a vibrant butterfly on canvas is an approachable project for any aspiring artist when you deconstruct the process into simple, manageable strokes. This tutorial focuses on the iconic Monarch, guiding you through the layering of colors and fine details that bring these delicate creatures to life. By moving past the "uncertain" middle stages of a painting, you will discover how small finishing touches create a professional and polished result.
Preparation and Background Layering
To begin, prepare an 11 x 14 wrapped canvas by transferring a butterfly silhouette using graphite paper. This provides a clear roadmap for your paint and ensures your proportions are accurate before you apply color.
The background should feel light and airy to complement the subject. Using a large flat brush and Cerulean Blue, apply paint around the outer edges of the canvas with loose, "slip-slap" strokes. As you move toward the center where the butterfly is located, gradually blend in Titanium White. This gradient effect draws the viewer's eye inward toward the subject. Carefully paint around the butterfly’s wings to keep your transfer lines visible for the next steps.
Coloring the Wings and Body
For the signature Monarch glow, double-load a 3/4" flat brush with bright yellow and orange acrylics. Sweep the paint from the body outward toward the wing edges to create natural-looking streaks. After establishing this base, use a pure orange hue to stroke inward from the outer tips of the wings, blending it into the yellow-orange mix. For added depth, a touch of deep red or vermillion can be applied to the very edges of the wings.
Once the wings are saturated with color, use a carbon black paint to fill in the butterfly’s body. At this stage, use the sharp "chisel edge" of your brush to pull a thin black line along the top ridge of the upper wings, establishing the structural frame of the insect.
Defining Veins and Wing Patterns
The intricate patterns of a Monarch are what make it recognizable. Using a thin liner brush or an acrylic paint pen, delicately draw the vein lines within the colored areas of the wings. If using a brush, thin your black paint slightly with water to ensure the lines flow smoothly without skipping.
Next, use a flat brush and black paint to fill in the thick borders around the entire perimeter of the wings. Be careful to work around the orange sections, ensuring the black frames the color rather than overwhelming it. This high-contrast border is essential for the classic Monarch appearance.
Adding Fine Details and Finishing Touches
The final stage is where the painting truly transforms. Using a fine liner brush or a stylus, add small white or light-colored dashes and dots over the black borders. While real butterflies have many spots, a "less is more" approach often works best in painting to keep the composition clean.
Finally, add the antennae using a steady hand and a fine brush or paint pen. Remember that painting often goes through an "awkward phase" where the elements look unfinished—persistence through this stage is key. Once these final highlights and delicate lines are in place, your butterfly will emerge with a lifelike and vibrant energy.

Czech Cubism, Permanent Exhibition of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague (Rewritten & Expanded)
Returning to a city you love is like turning the page of a book you never finished—there are always new chapters to explore, hidden corners to uncover, and stories to learn that didn’t make it into your initial visit. On a recent return trip to Prague, this sentiment felt particularly vivid. While my first visits had been filled with the iconic sights—the Charles Bridge at dawn, the grandeur of Prague Castle, the winding lanes of the Old Town—this time, I was fortunate to have a local guide by my side, someone who knew the city’s artistic pulse beyond the well-trodden tourist paths. It was through this guide that I stumbled upon the Permanent Exhibition of Czech Cubism, a self-contained treasure trove nestled within the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague. Housed in the legendary House at the Black Madonna (Dům U Černé Matky Boží), this exhibition isn’t just a collection of artworks; it’s a portal to a pivotal moment in Prague’s cultural history, when the city emerged as one of the most important centers of the Cubist movement outside of Paris. What makes this experience even more extraordinary is that the exhibition itself is set within a Cubist masterpiece—a building that embodies the very principles of the art form it showcases. In this expanded exploration, I’ll delve into the history of Czech Cubism, the unique characteristics that set it apart from its Parisian roots, the highlights of the exhibition, and why this underrated gem deserves a spot on every art lover’s Prague itinerary.
