Material Selection and Initial Design

The foundation of this project lies in a carefully curated color palette. To evoke a desert atmosphere, a selection of blues, pinks, oranges, and yellows is essential, along with neutral grays and whites for the road and sky details. Using various paper weights—ranging from 65# to 100#—adds structural integrity to the different layers. In addition to cardstock, you will need a paper trimmer, an electronic cutting machine, various adhesives (including foam tape for height), and a piece of sturdy cardboard for the final backing.

The process begins with a conceptual sketch. Drawing inspiration from modern landscapes, a capsule or rounded silhouette serves as the primary frame for the artwork. Sketching beforehand allows you to map out the placement of the sun, clouds, and hills while establishing the proportions of the road and sky.

Constructing the Base and Textured Layers

The top portion of the artwork starts as a large half-circle, roughly 10.75 inches wide. This geometric shape serves as the sky. The roadway serves as the foreground's focal point. Using gray cardstock for the pavement, small strips of yellow and white are applied to represent the center and shoulder markings. Precision is key here to maintain the perspective of the road as it recedes into the desert hills.

Assembly and Structural Support
