Radar Technology - a brief history

Radar technology is the backbone of Air Traffic Control. But its success story is far from over. Over the past 10 years, radar has made its way into automotive technology, manufacturing, and even e-health. This article provides a brief history of radar technology, from the beginnings of Heinrich Hertz to the present day.

Experiments with radar began in the late 1800s, when Heinrich Hertz noticed that metal objects reflected radio waves. In the early 1900s, Christian Hulsmeyer obtained a patent for his “Telemobiloscope,” also called the Remote Object Viewing Device.

Ships used this device to avoid collisions in fog. For the next few decades, little progress was made in the use of radar. Robert Page, who later became the Director of Research at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, demonstrated pulse radar in 1936. Experiments conducted by Page at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (along with Dr. Alfred Taylor and Dr. Leo C. Young) were able to detect the basic continuous wave pattern created by ship and aircraft engines, with indications that were barely visible on an oscilloscope.

By timing the pulses on the oscilloscope, the direction of the antenna indicated the angular location of the target and, just as importantly, the range could be determined. Together, the target was found. A “fix” had been made – in terms of the location of the antenna. As a result of this work, Page, Taylor and Young are credited with authenticating the world’s first radar.

The rapid development and success of modern radar during World War II cannot be underestimated. It was important to end the war in the interests of the Allies and as quickly as possible. In 1939, the United States Navy coined the acronym RADAR, standing for “RAdio Detection And Ranging”.

A major development in the use of radar came when physicists John Randall and Harry Boot of England invented the 5.6 cavity magnetron (also in 1939) a device that shortened the energy pulse of radio waves and allowed for smaller radar systems overall.

By the end of the war, there were a variety of land-based and sea-based radars and the use of radar for civilian purposes became an attractive proposition. Smaller systems allowed for greater mobility and use on a variety of platforms; all of this made radar systems more efficient and accurate. When World War II ended, scientists and inventors focused on the peaceful uses of radar. In this area, the use of radar was a new and exciting concept.

For civil aviation, radar was clearly of great value, but for fields like medicine, meteorology, and maritime navigation, the potential for radar applications seemed endless. At the same time, radar guns, used by police officers across the country, began catching drivers with big V-8 engines going well beyond the speed limits posted in the 1950s and 1960s.

For the violators, from the start, these unfamiliar devices must have added to the whole ordeal. Soon, radar was a household word, and people wanted to know not only how it could make their lives better, but also how this new technology worked. At first, people were concerned about whether these “waves” were safe. Later, convinced of this, people called for easier food.
