All About Butterflies

Butterflies are enchanting flying insects with large, scaled wings. Like all insects, they have six jointed legs, a body divided into three sections, one pair of antennae, compound eyes, and a protective exoskeleton. The three main body segments are the head, thorax (middle section), and abdomen (rear section).

The body of a butterfly is covered in tiny sensory hairs. Its wings and legs are attached to the thorax, which houses the muscles that power movement.

Flying

Butterflies are excellent fliers. They have two pairs of broad wings covered with overlapping scales that often shimmer with brilliant colors. Butterflies and moths (order Lepidoptera) are unique among insects because of these scaled wings. Wing veins provide structural support and carry nutrients and fluids throughout the wings.

Butterflies need a body temperature above 86°F (30°C) to fly. On cooler days, they bask in sunlight to warm up. As butterflies age, their wing colors fade, and the edges of the wings become tattered.

Flight speed differs by species. Poisonous butterflies are usually slower, while some skippers can fly at speeds exceeding 30 miles per hour. Others, slower species, travel around 5 miles per hour.

Life Cycle of a Butterfly

Butterflies undergo complete metamorphosis, passing through four distinct stages:

Egg – A butterfly begins life as an egg, typically laid on a leaf.

Larva (Caterpillar) – The larva hatches from the egg and feeds on leaves or flowers nearly constantly. Caterpillars molt multiple times as they grow, increasing their size thousands of times before entering the next stage.

Pupa (Chrysalis) – The caterpillar becomes a pupa, a resting stage where transformation occurs.

Adult – A fully grown butterfly emerges, ready to continue the life cycle.

Diet

Caterpillars spend most of their time eating leaves with their strong mandibles. Their very first meal is usually their eggshell. A few caterpillars are carnivorous, such as the Harvester butterfly larva, which feeds on woolly aphids.

Adult butterflies consume liquids through a long, flexible proboscis, which works like a straw. They mainly sip nectar from flowers, though some species drink from rotting fruit or even decaying animals. The Harvester butterfly, for example, pierces woolly aphids to feed on their bodily fluids.

Habitat

Butterflies are found worldwide in diverse environments, from hot to cold, dry to wet, at sea level and in mountainous regions. Tropical areas, especially rainforests, host the greatest diversity of species.

Many butterflies migrate to escape unfavorable conditions, such as cold weather. Most undertake short migrations (like the Painted Lady, Red Admiral, and Common Buckeye), while some, like Monarchs, travel thousands of miles.

Classification

Butterflies and moths belong to the order Lepidoptera. “Lepidos” is Greek for “scale,” and “ptera” means “wing,” highlighting their distinctive scaly wings. Lepidoptera is a massive group, second only to beetles in species diversity among insects. Approximately 150,000 species of butterflies and moths are known, with around 28,000 of these being butterflies.

Fossil Record

Butterfly fossils are uncommon. The earliest known fossils date back to the early Cretaceous period, about 130 million years ago. The evolution of butterflies is closely linked to flowering plants (angiosperms), which both caterpillars and adult butterflies feed on. Adults also act as vital pollinators. Flowering plants themselves appeared during the Cretaceous period, coinciding with butterfly evolution.
