Black-cheeked Lovebird

Basic Information & Status

The Black-cheeked Lovebird is one of nine species in the genus Agapornis.

It was first described in 1904 by Dr. A. H. B. Kirkman.

It is considered one of Africa’s most endangered parrots. Its wild population has declined due to multiple threats.

Natural Range & Habitat

Wild populations are found in small areas of Zambia, Namibia, and parts of Zimbabwe.

Their preferred habitat includes Mopane woodlands, acacia woodlands, riparian forests, and woodlands near water sources.

Elevation in their range is roughly 600-1,000 m above sea level.

Threats & Conservation Challenges

Heavy trapping for the wild bird trade has been a major cause of early declines (1920-1930s).

Other threats: habitat destruction (especially of Mopane woodlands), loss of reliable water sources, illegal trapping, and hybridization with similar species (notably the Nyasa Lovebird) which may threaten genetic purity.

Because its range is small and habitat somewhat fragmented, conservation efforts are important. Captive populations are seen as a safeguard.

Description & Behavior

Size: about 13-14 cm in length; adults weigh around 40 g.

Plumage: primarily green. Distinctive features include a reddish-brown to sienna forehead & crown, black or brownish-black cheeks & throat, orange-pink patch on the upper chest/breast, red beak, and a pronounced white eye-ring. Juveniles have similar features but are less vivid, particularly their bills are more orange than red.

Call: High-pitched, shrill chattering.

Captive Care & Aviculture

Diet in captivity: mixes of small seeds (e.g. millet, canary seed), fruits (apple, orange, banana), vegetables and green leafy parts.

Housing: They are social and do best with company. Pairs or small flocks in aviaries are preferred over single birds. Enclosure size should be appropriate to their activity level.

Breeding: Clutch size typically 4-6 eggs. Fledging age is around 6 weeks.
